Question Can I Modify The Telnet Server To Listen To Non-Standard Ports?

The Subject says it all. I would like to have the telnet server listen on a non-standard port. I don't want that open to the world to play with. Is it possible?

Depends. What telnet daemon you running? If it's the one that comes with xinetd (in.telnetd) then edit the /etc/xinetd.d/telnet file and add "port = 123" (without quotes) if you want it on tcp port 123.

If you are using some other telnet daemon then who knows.

-b

edit: remember not to use a port that some other service is using... else linux will bark at you.

I found the file, thank you. Can I have the default and another port? or will adding port remove the default port?

I had a really nice answer but I've changed my mind. Let me check something first.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I should be using SSH instead of telnet anyway. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the help guys, I'm learning more everyday.

ssh is a very good idea.

But.. if you still wanted to have telnet on 2 different ports at the same time there is a way without having to install two telnet services. I just finished running down an idea I had and it seems to work if you are using xinetd.d. If you are still interested then post back.

Welll, since I didn't know that telnet was not secure and ssh is, I'll stop using telnet. I've only been using Linux for about 6 months, to setup MythTV. Now I'm trying to see what I can do with Linux itself. Thanks again for your help.
