Well, you have the right to quit I'd say ;-p From a business perspective it really is not a bad choice to regulate network access provided the company plays by the rules. If they don't then it's like carrying water to the sea anyways. Maybe check a related note on network acceptable user policy.

Im a sys admin for a company who allows some usage of internet for personal usage while not exceeding a limit each day
honestly this is a much better policy and personally how would you feel if the company had such b.s
sorry but i get upset its like me telling you ohh you can drive your car but you cant listen to the radio while you deliver items to customers.

Right, but listening to the radio doesn't have any security implications.

Having a discussion is perfectly fine as long as it is not off-topic. The discussion here doesn't seem to be off-topic to me. Have you tried denying all connections to talk.google.com with Squid?

Well, if Google Talk requires clients to connect to talk.google.com in order to work, then blocking connections to that address should prevent it from working - regardless of which client they use. That said, if I was the OP I'd be looking at Squid logs during a Google Talk session to see what exactly is going on and stuff.

Are your users getting around the proxy server?

The general process I use to check is to set up a connection myself, monitor the traffic with wireshark and start blocking ports based on that.

Sometimes you'll get the ports blocked and the application switches to plain old port 80 (or port 443). That's when our desktop guys start deploying modified policies (mostly win xp here) that prevent the application from being available.

What does the Squid log show while Google Talk is being used?
