Beginner Linux Red Hat 9.0 secuirty question...

Hey!

I have a RH 9.0 installed using default settings. I am wondering if I create simple account, like useradd simpleuser, and will allow that person to connect to my machine via ssh to upload some files to their HTTP page, will that user pose any threat?

I mean, is, by default, linux configured in such way that newly created users don't have any ability to break anything?

Thanks

Hi,

RedHat is designed to operate as a server system and therefore should be secure by default, in terms of file permissions and access to system resources. So long as you have been keeping the system up to date with security fixes you should be fine - unless the user you are granting access to is some malicious and uber-l33t hacker.

I say go for it.

Ok... how do you make sure you're up to date with everything?

You want this page:

http://fedoralegacy.org/docs/yum-rh9.php

Ignore the big warning - it should all work fine - does for me!
