Basic things to do to make sure a server is secure?

Hi:
What would you say are the most important/ fundamental things to do or change after receiving a Linux (lets say cPanel) server to secure it? This assuming all software and OS are up to date. I'm not talking about super paranoid or complex security precautions, but easily applicable, essential things that all server owners should do and that won't break any php/cgi script either.

Thanks,

Consider running the CIS benchmark (http://www.cisecurity.org/bench.html).

Read a discussion of each thing it tests (http://www.cisecurity.org/tools2/lin...xBenchmark.pdf)
