Authentification messed up

I performed an update on my LE 2005 system and the /var partition ran out of space. After working that out, I found that I could no longer authenticate. X will not run and access to the MySQL database is rejected. How can I go about resetting the authentification?

Have you tried booting with the installation disks, going to repair mode, and re-installing whatever packages you were updating? Also make sure to check the system logs and dmesg for any error messages.
