Backdoors aren't built in to Linux. Peer review means that these things are caught very quickly.

Any distro of any OS is only as secure as the administrator (you) makes it. If you don't want backdoors, viruses, rootkits, etc., put the proper blocks and protection in place. And if your in a home environment don't login as root for normal activities.

SE Linux is Security Enhanced - even though developed by the NSA, peer review still takes place.

This is sort of true, but different distros come with different defaults. Some include firewalls (Mepis). Some don't open any ports (Ubuntu). Some make the default user root (Linspire).

If there's anything I've found with computers, it's that most computer users work with the computer's defaults--they rarely customize. I customize a lot, but I think I'm part of the minority.

As a side note, in a recent issue of Linux Format, they pointed out that Linspire closes all ports bar one by default making it, in their opinion, one of the most secure desktop distros around. And this is despite making the root user the sole user.

Although, lets not forget, Linspire does prompt you to make a normal user account.

I don't know if I'd call this "prompt[ing] you to make a normal user account." It makes adding a new user sound like an "advanced configuration option," not something nigh-necessary.
