Are local servers secure from the public internet

Hi,

I want to setup a local server for syncing files. I want to know if people outside the internet will see my local server or access it.

Thanks

Assuming that you have a router people outside your local net will only be able to see your server if you forward ports from your router to the server, otherwise it is invisible.
