Antivirus/Firewall Server

Hi,

I am having several windows based desktops & Laptops in my office.

I want to install small/dedicated Linux based server which will act as Proxy/Firewall/Antivirus server. I want all the internet access from windows based machines to be controlled by the Linux server.

Is is possible that I do not install any antivirus or spyware software on the windows based desktops & Linux server will prevent all the viruses/spywares/malawares etc.
I am finding it difficult to keep all the windows machines uptodate with antivirus & there are frequent occurence of viruses in the windows machine due to which windows/files get corrupted.

Also please advise which distro is best suitable for such job ?

Thanks,

Ravi Modi

Gateway..

Hi there...
Proxy and firewall is not so hard to accomplish. The antiviruspart... ...I don't think it's a good idea to skip the antivirus program on windoze... ...after all, it's windoze so...
What you can do is to get a server based antivirus program and let that handle the update. I have TrendMicro at my workplace, one server which handles that and about 60 clients. on the server I can configure when a scheduled scans are performed, I can also see which computer are affected and what version of the package their running and so on and so on...
I think you can have a similiar thing from Avast, that's a nice lightweight antivirus program.

About the distro, I might be wrong but I don't think it'll matter which distro you choose, it's the setup which determines how the computer will act. I use CentOS and Fedora but I've been moving over to CentOS more and more. For the firewall I use iptables, there are lot of other solutions so just dig around.

I hope that gave you some clues....
