Ad & ldap

I am trying to understand the concept of LDAP and AD and how it works. Like when user changes their password on AD server and add a new user, how the same
get reflected to Linux hosts. Could anyone help me understanding the same.

Thanks

  • AD is like a big phone book with peoples names and passwords in them.
  • Linux can use PAM to connect to the phonebook.
  • It looks up a name and a password hash in the phonebook, sees if the person logging in matches it, and allows access.

AD does not distribute the updated information, it simply allows clients to look it up centrally. Think of an operator, the operator gets a phone number update, but doesn't call out to everyone to let them know,.. we just each call in to realize the change when needed.

..and some of the 1.4 MILLION hits in Google for "how to configure ldap and active directory on linux" are:
http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials...authentication
http://www.chriscowley.me.uk/blog/20...ive-directory/
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/m....12.linux.aspx

And there are MANY more...Microsoft has plenty on their technet site, both Red Hat and SuSE Enterprise have comprehensive documents on their knowledgebases (which you have access to if you're paying for them..), and Google has plenty.
