Win a Gratis OSCON Pass from LQ

I'm happy to announce that we're able to give one full "Sessions Only" pass to OSCON away absolutely free. The pass is an almost $1,500 value and for those who have never attended, OSCON is always a fantastic event. Please keep in mind that LQ is not able to provide any transportation or lodging assistance - booking a hotel and getting to San Jose for the event (July 22-24) is entirely up to the winner. Please make sure you are able to attend the event before entering the contest. Visit http://en.oreilly.com/oscon2009 for more information on OSCON.

To be eligible to win, simply let us know why you'd like to attend and what you plan to do or learn at OSCON. You can do this one of three ways:

1) Post the information in this thread.
2) Tweet or dent the information. The tweet/dent must start with @linuxquestions to be eligible.
3) Comment with the information on the "Win a gratis OSCON pass from LQ" post on facebook.

Note that each entry will be counted individually, meaning you can enter the contest up to three times. A winner will be randomly selected from all eligible entires on July 6th. Good luck!

Really speaking I am not eligible. Can not attend it me being from India. But it should be a fantastic event. It is wonderful to hear that LQ is giving away the pass and one lucky member would really be called LUCKY.
I hope who ever wins this will let us know what event all was and what was new and share the knowledge he/she got there.

Would love to attend OSCON and see what is new and cool in the world of open source. What is the current state of OSS cloud computing? What are the committers talking about these days?

Why I would like to attend, and what I plan to do or learn at OSCON:

I've been working with and within Opensource projects for a number of years now and the best way to expand knowledge of what is currently available, best development practices, and what the future holds is to review other projects, attend workshops, and ask questions. So, that is what I would do at OSCON.

For example, at the moment I have a large LAMP project I've developed, which we are now in planning stages to modularize and make more adaptable to work in different environments. We have a potential client that wants to the product, but needs to have it run in a Windows environment. They have asked if we can adapt it to a (true) 3-tier model, with the presentation layer, business logic layer, and data access/storage layer on different servers. In their definition, the presentation layer cannot do any direct data requests, it must all go through the middle layer. I wouldn't think it would be a big problem to get the PHP running on a Windows server, and I can envision abstracting out the data layer (though the client has also requested that all data request be made to a SQLServer and executed via stored procedures, and that seems a little convoluted to me), but I'm having some difficulty in figuring out exactly how we would abstract the presentation layer.

On other projects I've used XSLT to abstract out the presentation layer (but from JAVA, though I suppose there is no reason it couldn't be done from PHP). I would explore at OSCON the answer to the questions: What is the best way to create a 3-tier project using LAMP systems, if any? Does anyone know of projects done in PHP that are true 3-tier that would be good examples to review?

I would like to attend to learn more about open source technologies and get a glimpse of what the future holds for Linux. I'm really excited to see what other developers are doing.

Congratulations to "Greg Martin" who will be headed to OSCON courtesy of O'Reilly and LQ. In the case that Greg is unable to attend, the backup selection is "dnatal".

Congratulations both of you Greg and dnatal. Hope you enjoy and learn something and tell us as well what you experienced there.

Wow! Good going, Greg!

And if you can't go, well, being that I came in second, please let me know as I would love to go as the alternative! And if you can't go, let me know what you were hoping to learn and I'll see if I can dig up some information on it for you.

What a bummer! I love to go to OSCON. I have not attended this before and I've heard that this is really a cool place to learn new things about open source. Anyway, if the backup is not able to attend... is it still possible that I am the 2nd backup / alternative?

Jeremy, Thanks so much for the opportunity to attend OSCON. I am checking with my employer to see whether they can fund travel costs as I still expect it will costs $1300 for travel & room. I didn't expect to win so I hadn't spoken with him yet. I should know quickly.

Thanks again for the pass. I'm looking forward to meeting some of my Open Source "heroes".

not so interesting to me
