try conky 1.3.0 -- lightweight, configurable system monitor

Hi everyone. not sure if this is the right place to post this, and I am not going to spam or anything, but here goes.

I would like to recommend you check out a little program called conky, which is a lightweight, highly configurable system monitor for X. a descendent of the now-defunct torsmo. its main purpose is to be uninvading and consume *very little* resources, much much less than gdesklets and gkrellm.

of course, you want screenshots \\/ , so find them under "screenshots" at http://conky.sf.net pretty documentation there too, as opposed to the rather long man page.

Conky 1.3.0, released just yesterday is out and about. download at http://www.sf.net/projects/conky . There's a debian package too now, made by yours truly :-)

coincidentally, i'm a conky developer :-). if you need help, post here, or join #conky on irc, or http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-...ight-conky.html (freakish 20+ pages though).

post bugs/feature requests at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=143975

Did I miss something obvious here?

Probably.
I read the rules as "advertising" - as in commercial advertising.

Personally, I have have no problem with free/open software being promoted here.
Makes it easier to find out what is coming along.

We have a News Forum especially for that..
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...?s=&forumid=59
Room for more editorial comments and review comments rather than posing questions for problems in this Forum.

I agree... I would not see any problems pointing out a good piece of sofware as long as your intensions are not for personal gain... I use Tosmo myself and maybe Conky could be a good predecessor for it...

moderators, i apologize. hence the first line of my post being "not sure if this is the right place to post this, and I am not going to spam or anything, but here goes."

this is not for personal gain, conky is 100% open source and free (although under the BSD license only because its predecessor, torsmo, was BSD. conky 2.0 will be GPL2). I just wanted to do a little pr for conky, and like I said, i am not going to flood the forums with more than one post about conky.

Is there a way to "move" this thread to the news/reviews section? or should I start a new thread there myself?

thanks,
jason

Torsmo defunt? I think not. They're still actually alive and well.

Edit: At least, last time I checked.

Not sure either. I hear it is no longer being developed but It is still a great application and will be viable for a long time to come... Sometimes their are new versions of software either by the same company or a similar product from another but I don't see any trying need to update the Torsmo I am using no, as it is serving me well.

conky was born because torsmo became inactive, after many unreplied emails to the torsmo developers. also, torsmo's last release (0.18) was December 21, 2004.

our goal with conky was to improve and add to torsmo, to make an even better system monitoring program. besides dozens of bug fixes, a list of differences/improvements/additions between Conky and Torsmo can be viewed at our ChangeLog

you have nothing to lose by trying conky out, and it is backwards compatible with your torsmo configurations. there is help available most of the day in #conky on irc, and there is very active development --- we closed out 7 of 10 feature requests for 1.3.0 and fixed all reported bugs. conky is the real deal... screenshots

I apologise. I read the rules as "advertising" meaning advertising. Oops.

no sweat.
Between us all we managed to a new product known, discussed, posted in the right place, and hopefully used.

Seems like a win all round.
