true but cast your eyes on this search using the web link....it does not strike me that the most relevant link appears at the top??

this may sound like a rant....its not meant to be....I did a search but the results were so misleading....600 hits today probably 500+ at time of post....please forgive me or tell me how to do it better please??????

I am not a newbie....feel free to tell me exactly step by step how to do it....so I can prevent a double post in the future.....others may learn as well?

thank you very much

aus9 03-27-2008 10:27 PM

and here is the search at the news level
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...archid=2265297

still 600 hits.

jlliagre 03-28-2008 01:56 PM

Sorry but I can do nothing with your search links. Search sessions do expire shortly.

What are you searching for and what do you think is misleading there ?

aus9 03-28-2008 06:40 PM

ahh ok...

try it with snapshots

http://h1.ripway.com/aus9/s-news.png

this is a search of the sub-folder syn-news and should IMHO show the appropiate url at the top of list....it shows of course just the main header and gave 600 hits.

Tricking me into thinking....each of those hits has the url in it?

2) but I would not have tried a s-news sub-forum search so the next pic
http://h1.ripway.com/aus9/s-news1.png

is at the parent level of news.

3) now mine shows up.

Interestingly, to me, a completely innocent of all url...shows up above....somewhat proving my point.

my point being that it is very misleading the search for url to get a hit close to the top.

I was mislead....I looked earlier...can not remember exactly what I did...but I know I got no meaningful results.

and probably looked into the first result such as the one in link 2 and realised it was not a real search result.

4) end of rant

aus9 03-28-2008 11:32 PM

ok I still don't remember the exact keywords I searched for but just did one for sun and virtualbox and got 12 hits and the earlier link shows up.

so forgive me for bad earlier searching.

I am leaving the strange hit result above but I will not be making a bug report on it.

end of my grumbling, for now eh?

Maybe it wasn't bad searching, after all?

This might not be relevant, but Google Search is being poisoned.

Quote:

A blossoming Web attack, first reported by security researcher Dancho Danchev earlier this month, has expanded to hit over a million Web pages, including many well-known sites.

In order to boost their Google rankings, Web sites often save a copy of these search results and submit them to Google. When a victim searches Google for the keyword, these cached search results then pop up, with the malicious code now inside them.

"Malicious parties are actively poisoning these sites search query caching feature to position the keywords among the top ten search results, thereby infecting anyone coming across them," said Danchev, in an instant-message interview.
