Sendmail removed from OpenBSD Base

Quote:
In the first of several commits, Matthieu Herrb (matthieu@) has removed sendmail from the release:
Quote:
CVSROOT: /cvs
Module name: src
Changes by: matthieu@cvs.openbsd.org 2014/09/15 16:25:57

Modified files:
gnu/usr.sbin : Makefile

Log message:
Unlink sendmail from the build. ok krw@ ajacoutot@
Users of OpenSMTPd can rejoice in having no work to do; others will have to install sendmail from packages.
More at OpenBSD Journal...

Fedora made an attempt to remove sendmail from the default desktop and minimal install recently, but the change was blocked. What are your thoughts?

With pretty much all "user" e-mail services being browser or IMAP based is there a need for an MTA in a desktop?

As for in a minimal install, clue is in the name, minimal with any half decent package manager it should be a trivial task to install it if needed.

Here's a link to the Fedora resolution: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Chang...efaultSendmail

It appears sendmail was removed from @core, but not @standard.

I wonder what the numbers are on sendmail installs. I don't install many servers, but I tend to disable or replace sendmail with workalikes at every encounter. Tutorials seem to recommend other MTAs so out it goes.

Yes. Programs like CRON need it to send email to the root account. A default desktop configuration should have an MTA (exim, postfix or sendmail) set up to only do local deliveries. That's how Slackware (Sendmail) and Debian (Exim) are set up by default.
