LinuxQuestions.org Turns Six

A couple days late on this, but it was six years ago that I made my first post here at LQ, introducing the site to the world. We've come a long way in six years: 2,311,325 posts, 254,019 registered members, participation from over 25 distributions and a small network of sites that I think serve the community well. I'd like to thank each and every LQ member for helping to make the site what it is. Despite our huge numbers, we remain remarkably friendly and relatively spam and flame free. Of course, I'd also like to thank the mods and volunteers who are a huge part of that. We remain committed to serving our community and doing whatever we can to make the site as good as it possibly can be. As always, we have some new items in the pipeline for you, so stay tuned.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LinuxQuestions.Org :)

I feel 'Privileged' to be a part of this family.

Happy Birthday LQ.

It was about six years ago that I installed my first Linux distro (Suse). I remember not even knowing what a drive partition was (Windows...baa!!). I've learned a lot since then and it's in no small part due to LQ and its membership.

Live long and prosper!

Happy Birthday LQ.

Although I've been using Linux since the late 90's, I've only been using LQ for a few months, but it and its members have proven to be a great resource, both personally and professionally. Thanks!

Happy Birthday LQ!
I've learned so much about Linux since I joined up, but not nearly enough, so I'm glad LQ is here to stay...

Happy Birthday.

I doubt that I could have climbed the initial Linux Learning Curve without this site.

Thanks Jeremy.

Well done!

I'm glad you've had the tenacity to stick with this project for six years, Jeremy. That's a long time in Internet terms, and maintaining a site of this complexity and with so much traffic is no small task, even with help. I can't begin to estimate how much help I've got from LinuxQuestions members. I was a total neophyte when I broke definitively with Microsoft products in January 2003, and took the plunge into Linux using a boxed set of Mandrake 8.0 that I'd briefly flirted with in '99 or so, but never got to work.

With the help of a local university computer technician who describes himself as a geek and secretly ran Linux servers at the university (!), I got my basic introduction to a system that still overwhelms me daily with its, in my opinion, unnecessary complexity and divergent standards (from one distro to another, and even within the basic Linux framework, inasmuch as is there is such a thing in a quasi-anarchic community). But I've learned enough along the way that I can solve many problems on my own now, recover at least fairly gracefully from catastrophic failures, and 90% of the time enjoy using Linux much more than I ever did enjoy Windows use. I like it that I, for all intents and purposes, own my software instead of leasing it from a paranoid and greedy corporation; I can freely distribute it within the terms of the very generous open-source licensing systems; I can customize it in literally infinite ways; and it's fast, responsive, and, as a side-benefit of no small importance to one who spends hours a day at the monitor, more beautiful to look at than Windows ever cared to be.

And all this progress is due in no small measure to help from LinuxQuestions. I try to pay back some of my debt by helping other users here. And I still come for help just about every week.

Congratulations on an ongoing job very well done!

Congrats Jeremy!!!!

I have been here just a little over a year and this is one of the few places I visit every single day.

I know LQ will only get better in the future...

This is the first linux forum I participate and needless to say, it has helped me a lot.
Thank you everyone for a great community.

@Chinaman: I remeber that I had emailed you to ask about chinese typing in linux and you reply that you weren't in china at that moment but I seem that you know how to type chinese in linux so I will ask you again via email
