LinuxQuestions.org is proud to announce the addition of the "LQ Job Marketplace", which will allow employers to post available positions for Linux, Open Source and programming related jobs. The LQ Job Marketplace will allow postings for full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary and contract positions.

This is something that demand has been building for for some time, and it's a feature we're proud to be able to offer. Also, I just posted this to my blog, but I think it bears repeating here. One huge benefit of this for potential employers is that they have the benefit of being able to look back at someones entire LQ history. A posting history that spans a year or two will likely provide more information that any resume or interview and will give you insight not only into a members technical knowledge, but also their demeanor, attitude and a variety of other things. I'd see that as a compelling advantage, although of course the job posting will get you wide enough exposure that many applicants may not even have LQ profiles.

Just a Q, I saw a thread the other day from some guy who didn't know anything about linux yet signed himself up for an unmanaged server hosting plan and couldn't set it up. Would this forum be an appropriate place for him to post asking for someone to help get things going for a small fee?

That was an entirely hypothetical example, just curious whether it's strictly "employment positions" or if can-you-help-me-for-$50 type requests are welcome too?

At this time I'd say it's only for positions, but based on feedback we may be able to accommodate other situations.

Personally, I believe that not only should the LQ Job Marketplace allow "can-you-help-me-for-$50" type requests, but should encourage them. Or, perhaps, a separate forum could be setup for these types of requests if they don't mesh well with the standard postings to the LQ Jobs Marketplace. I can't think of a better example of work for pay done in the spirit of open source than these "can-you-help-me-for-$50" type requests.

I'm not opposed to those kinds of jobs, but as you alluded to I'm not sure if they fit into the "LQ Jobs Marketplace". Based on feedback, something like LQ Freelance Marketplace could be possible. I'm open to discussion on the topic though.

I thought about the freelance aspect but left it out of my response (unintentionally). A separate freelance forum would be nice also.

I do not know if LQ has some escrow mechanism in place for both sellers and buyers. In absence of that - It might probably follow the trends of just blogging/posting websites for "Can you do my mystuff for 50 bucks". Where you may have some of the deals which may materialize bu overall perception still may remsin blogging.

Because If I do something and I do not know how I will be paid for it or when will i be paid for it or If I will be paid a part of it.

Posting Jobs is relatively easier and is controllable by nature. Tempraments there are far more composed and cool.

I'd hate this place to get like "The Expert Exchange" where one finds hits then on clicking on the link is invited to pay a fee for the answer. I've never clicked on one and hate it that they even come up in Google searches.

jlightner, just to make it clear, there will never be a fee associated with joining, posting, searching or any of the other current functionality you have as a member at LQ. We're committed to being a free resource for the Linux community for the long haul. Posting open job positions however is quite different from posting a question and for the value and exposure the post will get, the fee is very minimal.
