Linux custom search - replacing Google's Linux search
 

Google used to have a custom search for Linux at google.com/linux but they discontinued it. Supposedly it's enough to add linux as a search term, but that doesn't always work well.



So here's a replacement: Linux Search


This is useful:

• if you want to avoid spammy search results
• when searching for a rarely used term such as a model number - such searches often give hits which mention merely Linux in a sidebar or footer etc, but where the page itself is are not actually about Linux.

By narrowing the search down to only Linux-specific websites, you avoid these problems.

If you find it useful, consider it a small thank you to the Linux community.

This is NO REPLACEMENT for google.com/linux. It only searches that site's wiki, not the internet. And it seems to be a relatively new wiki, because it didn't have entries for anything I searched for.

Use the custom search box, not the site search
 

You must have been using the site search, rather than the custom search embedded within the page. (Maybe it's not showing up in your browser?)

(But appropedia.org/Linux_search is easier to find and easier to remember. Appropedia is a sustainable development wiki, though, with just a little about Linux, so it's not included in the custom search.)

Ah! I see now. The sentence, "If the search box isn't displaying correctly here, it's a temporary problem," is followed by the external link you mention.

Yes, that does seem to work as advertised.
