Linux based Palm OS

Looks like we're not far away from looking at a linux-native PDA. I've been looking for a new PDA, I may hold back and see where this is going. Here is the link to the article

Interesting.
My iPAQ just died recently, and I decided it was time to get a Linux PDA. I've been looking around a little bit. I was considering getting a Sharp Zaurus, but they're hard to get in the States now that Sharp isn't distributing them here anymore.
Maybe I can stand to wait a year and get a Linux-based Palm. That might be nice.

This sounds very enticing, it's great to see the industry shifting towards open-source firmwares and OS's in devices.

It's really becoming the most cost-effective and sensible way to do it, I think. Instead of re-inventing a complete operating-system to run on your new hardware, you use a good one that already exists. And "open source" enables you to do that (whether the source-code that you use is free, or purchased, or both). I think that we will see more and more momentum building in this direction.

After all, Apple (which is now a household name, at the front of common retail stores like Target) was able to move their OS/X system quite seamlessly from one hardware platform to another ... and to deliver, not only on their promises, but also on their schedule. Compared to, say, Vista/Longhorn "Windows Not-There" that's actually saying a lot about the engineering superiority of the approach. Probably makes the investors a whole lot more comfortable, too.

If you can't wait for a Linux driven Palm PDA, consider a Palm LifeDrive... There is a project in the works to port Linux to it,... and has made some substantial headway... Missing are only power management, wifi, bluetooth and some stability issues.

Pretty substantial progress for an effort without a ton of people behind it...
