"UK ISP TalkTalk has staged a wireless stunt, aimed at illustrating why it thinks Lord Mandelson's plans to disconnect filesharers is "naive"..."

I read about this earlier today and I think it is a great way of pointing out to the Government exactly why their ideas won't work or will cause them great problems. Good on my ISP for making a point in such a great way.

They will still pass the law. They want the power to disconnect anyone they want whenever they want, and they will have it.

I already heard that in the UK the torrent protocol is illegal, even though there are obvious legitimate reasons to use it. I wonder if you guys in the UK have any way around being blocked from using torrents. Otherwise you will be waiting longer to download the new release to (insert_distro_here).

"The only thing needed for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing."

If good citizens are not willing to stand up against tyranny, the we deserve the bad government that we get. You can fight city hall, but it isn't easy or popular and expect that city hall will fight back. Remember there is a difference between "freedom" and "liberty."

Absent mechanical restraints, I am free to swing my hands and arms any way that suits my fancy or to shout whichever words come to mind.
However, I do not have liberty to do so in ways that involve your nose or involve deceptions about fire in a crowded theatre.
... at least not in a civil society.

No law on any books will prevent any behavior except in those who are otherwise inclined to comply with the law in general or the specific law under consideration. Notice that some people are called "outlaws" for a clear reason ... they ignored the laws as written.

but I digress,

The problem is the average citizen doesn't have a clue when it comes to these issues. Why do you think DRM laws and such passed so easily? Its only when its too late and the citizen gets a rude awakening, that they realized they just got screwed. Complacency and lack of knowledge is the factors here. In this case "ignorance is NEVER bliss, it is FATAL."
