As for IPv6, I don't know how that has any significance on the domain names itself. I think the better question is, what about unicode? (This is WHY unicode is so important) Most proper OSs, such as *nix use UTF-8 and it has matured quite well. Hosting will probably not be an issue, but the question is will Windows play nice with these types of domains? (If they even play nice with non-latin script domains that are out now, since for some reason Windows likes to implement the use of UTF-16, rather than UTF-8, and those unfortunately don't always go well when mixed).

As for IPv6, I am sure it is more than ready now but I don't know what the hold up is. You are right, it is just as important, if not more because many new devices are gobbling up addresses and there are only so much addresses in a 32-bit arrangement. NAT helps, but it only delays the inevitable.
