So basically they have created what the general public has been begging for for years; Ubuntu that looks like XP.
I'd be interested in some general reactions from the Linux/Ubuntu community, but I have some specific questions also.
1) How legal is this, at this particular moment ? The interview with MS legal indicates they have not yet even challenged the legality of the clone's existance. So I'd be inclined to regard it as "legal" until proven otherwise.
2) Given that, is anyone considering working on a good chinese-english translation of the O/S ?
3) If so, where can I get a copy ? I'd be interested in experimenting with it.
I think if you're gonna copy the look of something it shouldn't be 10 years old. Aside from that, who would really want a linux imitating XP? I mean M$ apparently is less concerned with XP even as I reinstalled my copy of XP in a VM the other day, and I had to update, which required activation....That copy of XP used to require me calling into M$ to activate because I'd reinstalled it 15 or so times. There were no problems this time and I was "genuine"
So how difficult is it to get Ubuntu, or any Linux distro, to look like Windows XP? That is the great thing about Linux, it can look anyway you want it to.
"... these creative Chinese have gone one step further and hacked Ubuntu to look exactly like Windows XP."
And how difficult is it to "hack" Ubuntu to make it look different? Windows yes, but Ubuntu? lol I mean people have already done this as well as to make it look like Vista. I guess the deal is that they are shipping it as the standard look on their OS but it hardly seems like a big deal. The bigger question is, why would you want to?

I don't think M$ cares about XP and in fact I think they wish it would die so they can focus on pushing their newest products where the money is to be made.
IAside from that, who would really want a linux imitating XP?
Agreed. If someone's first thought when using linux is "I wish it looked more like Windows", then maybe they should just stick to Windows. These guys should either use linux without making it look like something it isn't, or accept the risks of pirating windows. It's like buying a cheap car and trying to make it look like a Lamborghini on the outside -- well, we are talking about windows, so I may have that analogy backwards
Yeah this news has been out for awhile, basically a hacker union created a hacked winXP and then got caught four years later , now the group basically took all the images of winXP and skinned them to Ubuntu.
