I contacted three or four before I got a response. I do recommend that you write to more than one address, as it's not obvious which address should be written to. Maximum, you've spread the word to more people!

Yeah, it seems that Dell now selling Linux is something that is making them reconsider. Whatever, I won't buy anything from ATI again, ever. Or from AMD, for that matter, as more or less everyone was expecting a major breakthrough at the time of the take-over. So naive. Today I'm no less disgusted with their crappy support for OSS than I was a year ago. I'm so glad that I finally got a replacement from Nvidia.

AMD and ATI just keep lying to our faces. How long ago was it that they announced open source drivers for their more recent cards? Three months? Well, I can tell you that the Linux driver developers are laughing their asses off (or maybe exactly the opposite?) because they haven't seen a thing yet. Only a few weeks ago, one of their spokesmen returned tho their customary point of view, that Linux users should really be grateful for what little they get. And what if they do suddenly cross the bridge? They still won't make any drivers for BSD or Solaris. Enough said. Dead and buried.

Sorry for the rant. I did actually tell them, int the pre-Dell days. And do you think that I ever got as little as an acknowledgement? They're really not waiting for any suggestions (without cheque attached).

While the newest drivers aren't open-sourced, ATI's upcoming set of drivers offer a HUGE performance boost.

Here's something to feel good about:

AMD to open up graphics specs

Basically, at the linux kernel summit, AMD announced that from r500 forward, they will open up the specifications for all graphics cards. Although I never received a reply, I think maybe I, and everyone else who participated in contacting AMD, had some effect.

Does anyone know whether the drivers will now work with FreeBSD/Solaris too? That was really the main reason I switched to Nvidia. I'm still not very likely to buy ATI in the near future but I was hoping to recuperate my x1600 for my Solaris/BSD box.
