Advertising Policy at LinuxQuestions.org
As I've said many times before, it's the members that make LinuxQuestions.org what it is. The time and dedication that many members put in is significant. As a thank you, I'd like to announce we're testing a new advertising policy here at LQ. First, We've removed some ads for all logged in members who have at least one post. Depending on your screen resolution, you'll see no ads above the scroll and only two ads on most pages. For members with over 500 posts, you'll see nearly no ads at all. This is our way of thanking you for the time and effort you put into contributing to the site. It's critical to me that LQ remain sustainable, so I can't guarantee that this policy will last forever, but I can say I'll do my best to keep ads at a minimum.

Well, i will just have to post more to my fellow *nixers. This is only however, another drop in the bucket why Linuxquestions.org is the FIRST place I go when a problem occurs with my system.

I knew there was something different about LQ, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it! Without the ads I have a smoother and quicker browsing experience. Having said that, I'd rather have the ads than no LQ :)
|
very true, much better both than neither. but if add's can be kept down then thats great. Thanks for everyone who contributes to this site, its still the best resource i've ever found.

Anyway, thanks Jeremy for the new ad policy! |
Thank you, Jeremy!
FWIW, fewer ads also makes LQ look less cluttered. :D Quote:
Cheers |
Thank you, thank you, thank you. :D
I just hope I don't start missing them. ;) |

We'll never promote junk posts (and don't forget that General does not increment your post count). We don't plan to actively promote the ad policy.

that's right.. even if most of the times members are members only to join some features reserved of the forum, that's the way 'cause they do not write so frequently, i think..
|
WOw...
I will have to say...BOOOO YYYYAAAHHHH hehehe for all you military people |
Let me say thank you to all of you...
|
Ok, then I'm gonna start helping comrades... xD
|
yes I would like but...
i´m very interested in participate in your forum, by now I would need to put link to an small questionnaire about online forums but I´m not sure that you would allow it.
the questionnaiere is in the server of an spanish university and there are NOT advertisment neither is requested any e-mails or personal information. I need the answer in order to finish my final proyect degree...Should I post the link???? |
Well thanks a lot Jeremy and all the mods and also everyone else that helps out on this forum , i get most of my answers by roaming through this here site about slackware issues....and others...but i do not like to post just for the sake of posting and with Adblock Plus turned on i do not get that many ads anyways....;-)
|
That's nice, Jeremy, thanks.
But can't you place ads which can be routinely filtered by Firefox and its plug-ins ;)? Or are your customers paying by clicks on the ad -- then this wouldn't work. On the other hand I never click on ads anyhow... |
I don't like it.
Most of the time I learn more by keeping my mouth shut than by speaking. The same is true of my internet experience. Generally I do not join in conversations, but enjoy reading them. I do not like being punished for that behavior which wastes no space.

wlrc06, in what way do you feel you're being "punished"?

Thanks Jeremy,
We will really appreciate your contribution & helping nature, I would like to keep going more good posts in future, but keep add value lower to load forums page. |
I'm a new user
Dear friends,
I need to confess that I received help in this site. Thank you. In reality, I have many lacks in knowledge, and little knowledge to share. I have an old hardware (AMD K6 II 190MB 510MHZ) and an old distribution of Linux. It's why I didn't give opinion concerning the best softwares released in 2008 (or 2007). Furthermore, I have few time and I have login in about 10 Foruns. However, I would like to be welcome to ask you anew. Thanks. |

We were all newbies to Linux at one time. I have to confess, I still don't know all that much, I Google for most of the answers I provide. But however one can find the answers, that's why we're here-- to help others like you. Cheers |

Looks like I'm going to have to get busy. For some reason I post questions on the site that my distro resides. Somehow that's embarrassing. I know how good a forum this site is.
The lesser know distros have a home here. I have always received good comments when I was in trouble with my distro or some aspect that I had overlooked. On a side note the emails I get when someone posts comments to some section that I have post before is a great idea. That's why I'm here today. Thanks Jeremy. This ad thing is a great idea. It gives posters here with tenure some perks. |
The most annoying about many sites is the flashing and moving advertisements. It really makes me leaving as soon as possible.
Fortunately my browser, Opera, provides PER SITE settings for allowing animated gifs and flash. (That is the best invention since sliced bread). So at first I did not notice the absence of al that trash. But thanks Jeremy, it is great to reward contributing members and with this move you invite them to come back and stay here. jlinkels |

OK with me, but why not set a trend and allow....
...and allow us to pick the kind of advertisements we want, sort of like StumbleUpon allows us to choose specific topics? It would be handy to go to Google or Yahoo and see only ads we want to see, such as ads for books published around the world and their associated publishers.
Categories I would choose would include generic Linux distributions, expatriates, Ducati motorcyles, Maserati cars, bio-dynamic construction and farming methods, and so on. By checking off what ads we are interested in so the robots don't have to guess, LQ could set the trend and use its copyrighted suggestions in the forums here to earn royalites. :newbie: Cayitano |
I for one have to say I never really minded the adds but like others I did notice something diffrent but couldn't put my finger on it.
I personally think that the adds that were on LQ have been very unobtrusive I have seen other post forums where they insert them into the responses and put ones that come out in the middle of the screen and other sorts of nonsense. For the people that think this is punishment I cannot agree with you as you are getting the same experience that you have always had here at LQ its only the people that have had an active role here that will have any sort of change. Thank you for this little reward. And if you still dont want to post and don't want adds you can always become a contributing member and turn them off. On that note I think its way overdue for me to become one so I think ill go do that now. |
What ads?
I have the Adblock Plus extension and it comes pre-configured with most ad sources blocked. Am I missing something? I am not sure what you all are talking about. |

But, I hated only the ones that moved, twitched, or blinked -- they got on my nerves, I think literally. Whenever there was a flash ad displayed, I found that I could not concentrate on the page. I wonder if this is physical symptom -- borderline epilepsy, or, more likely, borderline ADD, or some other undocumented "geek syndrome". In any case I would like to see relevant, discrete, text ads; not just for the revenue they would bring LQ, but for their content. |
That is indeed a bug. We'll get it cleaned up in a future release. Thanks for the feedback.

Wow ... So the more I help people - the more respected I get and the lesser ads I see.
What more could I ask for ... People who need help - Here I come !!! :D Linux Archive |
