A Roundup of News from LinuxCon

Quote:

LinuxCon has been going on this week, and lots of interesting news is coming out of the conference. Among other attention-grabbing events, Valve CEO Gabe Newell was speaking at the event and called Linux the future of gaming. Meanwhile, The Linux Foundation delivered its annual report on Linux kernel development in conjunction with LinuxCon, and Google and Samsung have arrived on the list of top 10 contributors. Here are some of the headlines coming out of LinuxCon.

As Tom's Hardware notes, Valve CEO Gabe Newell said, "It feels a bit funny coming here and telling you guys that Linux and open source are the future of gaming. Sort of like going to Rome and teaching Catholicism to the pope so bear with me." Newell has also hinted at the arrival of the "Steambox"--a new gaming hardware system based on Linux.

In its report on Linux kernel development, The Linux Foundation noted that mobile and embedded companies are increasing their investments in Linux. Linaro, Samsung and Texas Instruments together increased their aggregate contributions from 4.4 percent during the previous version of the kernel report to 11 percent of all changes this year. Google’s contributions are also up significantly this year.
