Zorin OS on HP Compaq nx6120

Firefox26 is the default browser.. but it is out of date and not supported by my Google Mail.. It also will not auto update.. and I keep getting warnings about Adobe Flash version being unsafe..

I have a lot of Bookmarks which I would like to save.. before doing anything radical.

Downloading the latest Firefox 34 for Linux from Mozilla [firefox-34.0.5(1).tar.bz2] does not help it only unpacks all the files but does not begin to install anything. Trying to execute [run-mozilla.sh] the only script file.. opens it in an editor?

How to save my bookmarks and update my browser..?

Which release of Zorin are you using? If you have Zorin 9, the most recent you should be able to update from the Ubuntu repositories. You should be able to run the script from a terminal rather than opening it from a file manager. Make sure it is executable first.

Thanks..

I have Zorin 7

Zorin 7 is based on Ubuntu 13.04 and support for it ended about a year ago so you won't be able to get updates or download software by the standard methods.

You need to make it executable if you have not done that. Then run it in a terminal by changing to the directory in which the file resides and do: ./run-mozilla.sh It it is a bash script you could also do: bash run-mozilla.sh

Thanks..

(1) Is it possible for me to 'find' the repository for the list of bookmarks in my browser and copy them..?

(2) Instead of updating the browser is it a better plane to save everything and upgrade the OS.. maybe even to Ubuntu..?

Ok I've given up with firefox and loaded Google Chrome.. all works well and I could import all my bookmarks.. BUT

I now want to remove the firefox icon from the title bar and replace it with my Google Chrome start-up icon.. For the life of me I cannot see how to do this..?? Still using Zorin 7..

That may solve your browser problem, but you will not be getting security (or any) updates for the whole system. Just hope you understand that.

Also, to export bookmarks from Firefox:

Thanks.. Now I have preserved my bookmarks.. I suppose I should upgrade the OS..

I am concerned about 'laptop' issues.. and just don't know what would be a good working OS for this HP Compaq nx6120 machine. I am led to believe there comes a point where upgrades to almost any Linux distro will eventually require a new machine..?

So I would like to get some advice on that..

It is practically impossible to say without trying unless someone sees your post and that someone is also using that specific computer. Companies like HP and Dell and others have hundreds of different models. You could try testing a few by downloading and either putting them on a DVD to test or a flash drive. Using a rolling release might be an option as you don't need to reinstall on a regular basis. Otherwise, some versions are supported for longer periods of time. Ubuntus such as Zorin are examples. Ubuntu, Mint, Kubuntu 14.04 releases will have support until April, 2019 for example. You could take a look at the distrowatch site below which has links to a large number of Linux distributions which would give more detailed info. You can read through them and compare the information there to what your needs are.
