Zorin 8

hi folks, can anyone tell me how I can get my opera icon into the quick launch tray? I've tried dragging it there. I can drag the icon onto the desktop but not into the quick launch area at the bottom left. Sorry about using windows terminology!

Assuming "quick launch tray" refers to the panel, I take it you have tried dragging it from an open menu to the panel. That works with some GUIs, but not with others. With some GUIs an application can be added to the panel by right-clicking on the menu entry. It is also possible to add and remove panel items with Panel Properties/Configuration, which will either have a menu entry or can be invoked by right-clicking on the panel. In other words, it would help to know which GUI you are using.

hi Randi, my GUI is Zorin 8.
If I right click is gives me options related to one of the three applications presently there, but not for the panel as a feature. If I right click on the application in the menu bar, it gives me options to add to startup or to desktop, but not to the panel.

I tried the release candidate for Zorin 9, when a program is open, I could right click on the app icon in the task bar and select create custom launcher. That may in 8 as well. I think it still used AWN...

No it is not. Zorin is the operating system. The open source world has many graphical user interfaces. Zorin probably uses KDE, Gnome or Xfce.

The Zorin website is wonderfully bereft of such basic information. (What a quality system.) According to DistroWatch it uses KDE and Lxde, but they do not say if the two GUIs are offered separately or are merged together. Probably the latter, but no guaranty. I have never seen Zorin.

Copy & past from the Zorin FAQ:

For the Zorin Desktop based versions (not Lite):
1 GHz x86 processor
5 GB of Hard Drive space
512 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution

For the LXDE based versions (Lite):
266 MHz x86 processor
2GB of Hard Drive space
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
Graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution

It seems there are 2 versions. Lite one with LXDE, and the normal one with their own customized DE. They don't mention on which DE it is based. If they say minimum of 512 mb RAM, that would be pretty low for KDE. Compared to Mint which states that 2 GB RAM is minimum for their KDE version. While the other editions with Cinnamon, MATE or XFCE are good to go with 512 mb or 1 gb minimum.

Here on my laptop with Mint 17 and the Cinnamon desktop I can create a panel shortcut by rightclicking the desired program in the start menu and then select add to panel. Likewise for a desktop shortcut. Other options are adding to favourites or uninstalling the program.

This is close to what worked. Right click on the app icon and select "pin application".........it won't happen straight away but it will happen :-P
