Your repository files are causing the problem. I don't know what system you use, but this sounds like the Fedora 10 default install without the updated packages for yum and networking code. So for Fedora 10 you have to download a recent yum package and update your current yum installation.

He mentioned he was running RHEL5.

I also suspect it is your repo files. Please post the results of yum repolist .

Can you show what repo files you have defined in /etc/yum.repos.d, and perhaps paste a couple of them here. Since you are using RHEL5, where did you get the repos from?

Do we assume that you are running an unsupported version of RHEL?

Ok, you are running RHEL5 without paying for a subscription. This means that the base system has not received any updates. Since the installonlyn plugin functionality was moved into yum itself starting with 5.1, we can assume that you are running 5.0, current is 5.3. It also MAY explain why yum repolist is not working (not sure when that was added to yum). You really need to have those updates. Either pay the subscription or switch to another distro. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed(made from the same source). Centos is free to download and update. You could add the Centos base repos and update your RHEL base system that way.

Now aside from all that; post your epel.repo file as it seems to be malformed.
