Question yum -install returns error with repo

Hi, my name is Khanh Hua. I'm from Vietnam. I ran into Fedora Core 5 when I was looking for a totally free OS, with totally free applications, especially graphics and compilers. Thank you all for the works, which are free to download and install!!! God bless you guys. I don't have to use cracked Win Applications, I feel really bad when using these though sometimes I HAVE TO.
I have a problem with how to install games such as worminator, and lincity. I used

yum -install <package filename> (with .rpm)
command but it returned some error, something like:
core ... [1/3]

I hope you can help me with such vague information. And can you tell me more about installing other (any) packages, about repositories and their purpose and how to use it? I'm used to "live" in Windows XP but not Linux... Thank you all in advance!

hey first u need to check /etc/yum.d dir for all the repositories mentioned up there. the error yum is showing is because it is not able to resolve the repositories mentioned in...

in yum .d there are file which contain the addresses of the download databse for the fedora site...

one more thing fc5 usese yumx..

just run ur package manager fromthe menu.. it itself will connect to all the repos, and show u the list of updates and package available than u select those and install those....

In the menu, click on "Add/Remove Software" (that's pirut). You'll be asked for root password; give it. Look through the lists or search for the program you want. Dependencies will be added automatically.

When you want to add applications that are not in the repositories, you can add repositories. There is a good installation guide that tells you how here -- http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html

You should always take great care in adding repositories. Sometimes the repositories conflict with each other.

When you want to download a package from the web and install it with yum, make sure the rpm file was packaged for Fedora. Those that were packaged for Mandriva and its derivatives may cause you problems and/or yield errors.

Thanks for replying. I did try both Updater and Add/Remove Software. But both return Error Retrieving Information. Then they terminate! By the way, I could not use yum update either... this returned the same error I mentioned in the previous post.
So how/where can I get the appropriate repos for games and such? Do I have to insert an installation CD when running this???
Thx!!!
