What distro and version are you using?

red hat linux.. the newest version i think 9?

forrestt 05-18-2009 03:58 PM

OK, that's your problem. Red Hat 9 is no longer supported. It hasn't been for years. What that means is that there are no longer any repos for yum to attach to. If you are going to use this as a server, I would suggest that you try CentOS if you are going to use this as a desktop system, I would recommend using Fedora.

Red Hat was a free as in beer version of Linux offered by Red Hat, Inc. Several years ago they started offering an "Enterprise" version of Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or RHEL) that has a longer support cycle, but it requires purchase of a support contract to access updates. Shortly after they started offering this version, they stopped offering their free as in beer version. However, they started supporting another free as in beer distro, Fedora, that they now use as a test-bed for apps that they may include in future versions of RHEL. The main thing to take away from this is that Red Hat is not RHEL.

Yes, it seems that people far too ofter confuse Red Hat Linux with Red Hat Enterprise Linux...

We all need to remember.

Red Hat Linux != Red Hat Enterprise Linux

billymayday 05-18-2009 04:59 PM

That message looks more like RHEL5 though

forrestt 05-18-2009 05:10 PM

billymayday, why do you say that? RH9 used rhn as well. Is there something I'm missing?

Forrest

billymayday 05-18-2009 05:21 PM

I may just be wrong. Did RH9 have yum?

forrestt 05-18-2009 05:57 PM

Now you're trying to get me to use some very old brain cells. They are more than likely long dead, but I do think they are saying that it did.

Forrest

billymayday 05-18-2009 06:06 PM

A quick google suggests it did.

uhmaster2000 05-18-2009 07:11 PM

uhmaster2000 05-18-2009 07:12 PM
