OK, that's your problem. Red Hat 9 is no longer supported. It hasn't been for years. What that means is that there are no longer any repos for yum to attach to. If you are going to use this as a server, I would suggest that you try CentOS if you are going to use this as a desktop system, I would recommend using Fedora.

Red Hat was a free as in beer version of Linux offered by Red Hat, Inc. Several years ago they started offering an "Enterprise" version of Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or RHEL) that has a longer support cycle, but it requires purchase of a support contract to access updates. Shortly after they started offering this version, they stopped offering their free as in beer version. However, they started supporting another free as in beer distro, Fedora, that they now use as a test-bed for apps that they may include in future versions of RHEL. The main thing to take away from this is that Red Hat is not RHEL.

Yes, it seems that people far too ofter confuse Red Hat Linux with Red Hat Enterprise Linux...
