YUM Could not update.

Hi All,

Recently, I am encountering some difficult in Yum Updates. So far, I am trying to update and it kept giving me a lot of timeout:<urlopen error timed out.>

I am behind a fortinet 60 firewall but it has open port 3128 specifically for yum updates.

Sorry everyone, being a newbie, I figure I should post the whole situation rather than painting a vague picture. Apologize for this long post but any help would be great if I could get yum to work.

If you use a proxy at port 3128 (3128 is typically the port for a proxy server), you need to configure yum to use it. If you fortinet is just a firewall, it should have port 80 opened, not 3128, as the yum servers are approached through the regular http port (80).

foxy188 09-13-2011 03:58 AM

Hi rhoekstra,

Its just a firewall. I have checked and port 80 is opened. Is a very funny thing i have here. Been figuring it out but no avail

rhoekstra 09-13-2011 08:15 AM

If you would try to do a 'wget http://centos.syn.co.il/5.6/os/i386/...primary.xml.gz' on that machine, does that work?
if not, does 'host centos.syn.co.il' work?

John VV 09-13-2011 08:57 PM

also you have the install dvd ( the media) turned on
turn it off
that will stop one of the errors you get
Quote:

[c5-media]
name=CentOS-5 - Media
baseurl=file:///media/CentOS/
file:///media/cdrom/
file:///media/cdrecorder/
gpgcheck=1
enabled=1
set that enabled to 0 zero

also the best way to find out what reop is on or of or installed or not installed is with " yum "
Code:

su -
yum repolist all

see
Code:

yum --help
man yum

foxy188 09-13-2011 11:56 PM

Hi rhoekstra,

I tried as you recommended. It doesnt work. It just says Error 404.

[root@www ~]# wget http://centos.syn.co.il/5.6/os/i386/...primary.xml.gz

Coming from a Newbie, I stand corrected [if any mistakes I say]..

I check on the mirrors-rpmforge located in /etc/yum.repos.d.

The mirror list inside there is so old. Check everyone of the link and error crops up.

Are there any new list which I should try for Centos 5.2?

John VV 09-14-2011 04:00 AM

centos 5.2 is unsupported Cent only supports the current minor version
CentOS 4.9 , 5.6 and 6.0 ( soon to be 5.7 and 6.1)
have you read the wiki
if you are behind a router firewall you need to configure yum to use it
and or open ports
http://wiki.centos.org/
also the red hat documentation
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...erprise_Linux/
and the fedora wiki
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Project_Wiki

keep in mind that like RHEL cent and scientific linux are not designed for the desktop .
they can work but it is NOT the best OS for that use

you need to run an update to get to 5.6 ( best bet is a new install cd ( the first 2 or of the 5 should do )

foxy188 09-14-2011 05:02 AM

Hi John,

Thanks for the prompt reply

Just out of curiosity, If I were to upgrade using the disc, will it be a clean install or just an upgrade patch?

I start to shiver when I always hear upgrades..

John VV 09-14-2011 02:56 PM

the redhat minor upgrades almost always work flawlessly 5.5 to 5.6 BUT going from 5.2 to 5.6 ?
" yum upgrade "

should do it but ?

Or you could use the 5.6 install dvd to " upgrade an existing install"

seeing as i take it firefox passes through the router but "wget" and "yum" do not
it is looking like ports are closed
