Your Thoughts on Best Desktop

I've been using FC3/KDE for a while now and am going to switch to Debian. I figured I might as well switch to a better desktop too. Is there a best desktop? I mean kde is kewl it recognises my hardware, dvd burner, usb devices. But kde runs a little glitchy in my opinion while at the same time using a WHOLE LOT of resources. What do you think???????????

It'll cost you on the eye-candy side, but it sounds like you could accept that. So I say go light if that's what you want.

A few names to check out: {flux, match, black}box, iceWM, Ratpoison. windowmaker.

Ratpoison, in particular, is interesting: it is `screen for X' and aims to be completely rodentless.

No, there isn't a best desktop. But there is a best desktop *for you*. I don't know what it is, but good luck with finding it :-)

Hi.

Have a look at what the LQ members voted for last year:

and

Fluxbox is my desktop (well, window manager) of choice, both for my reasonably powerful desktop machine, and my woefully underpowered laptop.

i tried fluxbox and blackbox but both are pretty much the same and i think i found the menu in them but it was very incomplete for lack of better choice of words. i think im gonna try out a few more like ratpoison and rox.

If you find fluxbox incomplete you definitely
won't like ratpoison ;}

just a thought but what version of kde where you using ?

as kde 3.4 runs faster than older kdes

ingvildr 09-06-2005 04:40 AM

if you want something faster but fluxbox feels incomplete try xfce4 its a nice and light DE.

Agreed.
Xfce is definately the better offer for me - at the moment. I installed Fluxbox, too, for when I want real speed - but Xfce is nice at the moment

the 3 desktops i use are gnome, kde, and xfce i like them but im just trying different ones to see if there are better ones out there. i guess what i meant b y incomplete is they dont really have a menu or if they do i couldnt find one.
