Thumbs up Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds

I have installed RHEL 4 on my server Xeon Processor HP ML 150. The System was working very fine till monday evening. The system was not booted for 2 days. Today when I tried to log into the graphical Desktop, after giving the user name and password, i got the following error.

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default : Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default : running : /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -X "/var/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h " -1 " : 0" "root"

I am unable to use the graphical Interface.

Please bail me out of this problem immediately.

Thanks a ton in anticipation.

Are you able to log into your server as runlevel 1 or 3? These are text-mode runlevels that should allow you to determine if your problem is Linux, or X11 related.

What does 'df' report? This will tell you your drive space.

What does 'dmesg' report? This will show you startup information, including some errors that may hint to your problems.

Have you installed anything, or changed any configurations on your server recently?
