I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".

How do I get authorized?

Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.

Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

Linux Mint has nothing to do with M$ WinXP

since I have know Idea about windoze because I have not used it since 1997.
do this first
1. Connect your computer to the intenet using the wired LAN connection. I.E. Plug in you network cable to the computer in question to connect to the intenet.

2. Go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. Enter your password.
now if it shows you have a broadcom wifi then enable it it will install the driver.
the driver is not allowed to be distributed so you have to request it.

if you do not have the bcm. then click the little icon wifi manager scan for your connection and then connect.

Directly no, but when the Linux Mint install repartitioned the hard drive it altered something IE an Win file system needed. Other things are quirky now in XP where they weren't before. The repartition ***HAS*** effected Win XP negatively.

That is what I am doing. It shows I need wireless card driver and video driver. When I click on the activate button for either I immediately get the "You are not authorized to perform this action" message. There is no input box or popup to type my password into on this Hardware Drivers screen that I can find.

Ubuntu let me add the drivers without any passwords.

XP is inherently unstable. I have to use it at work.

Linux installations do not touch windows partitions, why should they bother?

The linux developers do not care if you wish to run windows, many of them do run windows as well, and then make it easy for you to do this with "dual booting".

There is no mischief involved. If windows isn't working, then please call MS Support. Back in '98 I tried this, but never, ever, got through to a real person, so I gave up.

Linux "voluntary tech support", as here on LQ, outsmarts and answers faster than MS "tech support" most of the time.

If you say to MS (if you ever get through) "XP was OK until I installed linux", they'll blame it on that.

I have not used "Mint", but there's probably a button to click that says "Authorise", or "Make changes".

Then you'll have to give your password.

You'll learn to work in a different (IMHO "better" way) if you persevere with linux.

You didn't learn windows in a day, why should this be different for linux?

If you do not know your password when you are the one that set it up then search the site on how to get a new sudo password. Welcome to the sudo asylum. your password is the same as your login password if not then you are not logged in as the sudo user. and that is the user that installed the system.
Linux mint is a Ubuntu clone.

Good point Drakeo: If RockyRX is not logged in as the original user who installed the system then he's unlikely to have sudo privileges automatically granted to him.

i have a computer tht was purchased about 4 years ago with ThizLinux disc packeged with it. Iused it for about two months for mstly games.tere isn. any informtion of importance on it to lose. I stored the com. for the last 4 yrs but decided to get it back out. Now my problm .I cant remember my rppt password or myintry password. I will not loose any valuable information if thew system is erased and reinstald. I still have the Thiz disc. Q how do I do this
