Yellow Dog (PS3) - n00b

Hey guys .. This is my first post so, it will have some n00b questions.

URGENT -- 1. I've downloaded a file that is in tar.gz and i've extracted it on console (i wrote tar -zxfv ....well i wrote the command to extract it) and now i've a folder with many files. How can i install it ? Ive seen some foruns and tutorials but they are for Ubuntu and some commands dont work.

2. How do i use YUM command ? i write yum list update and it says:

Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up repositories
extras [1/3]
extras 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
updates [2/3]
updates 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
base [3/3]
base 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
Reading repository metadata in from local files

Isnt it suposed to tell me what software needs a upgrade :O ??

PS: You can call me n00b cause i dont mind...

Thanks,
tuniq
