yahoo voice chat
 

does anyone out there have a clue as to how or if i even can get voice to work for yahoo chat im running redhat 8.0 and have searched for days just ran across this forum i would really like to get rid of windows all together yet i want the voice chat to stay in touch with family and friends :confused: can anyone help

With a tone like that you aren't gonna get much help anywhere. You make it sound like we are all a bunch of idiots, just guessing and getting lucky every now and then.

Way to welcome a new-comer, jdc. Care to elaborate on how moto's "tone" was so damn offensive to you? The guy just asked if anyone "had a clue" regarding his problem. For the record, many of us do guess and get lucky quite often. "...a bunch of idiots"? ...guilty conscience, perhaps? At any rate, please speak for yourself. YOU sir, "make it sound like" we are all a bunch of rude, unhelpfull assholes.

Having stated that, I'd recommend, moto, that you at least check out programs such as gaim and gyach.... gaim is a multi-protocol messaging client. Gyach is a great client for yahoo chatrooms and it also supports private messaging. Although neither of these programs supports voice-chat (yet), they are actively being developed and you would do well to keep an eye on them. Check out freshmeat.net for these programs and more that may suit your needs.

I know that Gaim supports plugins, so maybe there is one floating around out there for voice-chat... Personally, I'm hoping for webcam support soon... but I AM 100% Microsoft-free, and I feel I can wait. If all else fails... you could read-up on coding and develop the software yourself :D

What I meant was that you should use a more friendly non-condescending tone. Some of us here are professionals and do not refer to our ability to find solutions as "having a clue". We spend many long hours, months, and even years researching and learning and to have it referred to as such can be offending. Asking the question in a more respectful way such as "Could someone help me..." would be much better than "does anyone have a clue".

That being said, I hope that pwcca will also apologize for his/her insinuation that I am an idiot. 2 wrongs don't make a right my friend. Let's not make a flame post out of it.

check out gnomemeeting (compatible with netmeeting; 'start->run->conf'). check out ayttm for a yahoo! compatible webcam voice chat client still under heavy development.

by the way...
i know wine is rarely talked upon, but i tried too get the net-to-phone thing on yahoo messenger working with wine and it failed miserably(proproetary library or some crap). anyhow the point to all of this is that the messaging part of it worked just swell. wine isn't installed on my box right now but maybe we ould do a little test. ie i could install wine and the yahoo messenger and so could you and we could see if it works. anyhow...

this is the easiest way to do yahoo voice chat in any linux system. It is platform independent, works like a charm, and is very simple to get going. That said.. Have fun and go chat.

Trying to compile this and Linphone (required, but their own version, not a Linphone package) is not for the faint hearted! Theres a lot of missing files that have to be downloaded from CVS, and files have to be moved to other directories manually after installation.

Whoops, just noticed this is the Newbie forum, this one is probably not for you yet, but worth keeping an eye on. It will provide voice and video in yahoo and msn from Gaim when it's merged into Gaim.

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).

2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
