I tried installing yahoo messenger in ubuntu. The downloading part is fine but the saved file cannot be opened. Actualy, I am being asked to choose the application program to run the exe file but i wonder what I shall select. Stick w/ native Linux apps for the time being, then you can get into learning Wine, etc.. as said, Pidgin will run your Yahoo IM account just fine.. I don't know if you're familiar with Trillian for Windows, but think of Pidgin as Trillian on steroids.
