Xwindows freeze

I've tried installing both Red Hat 7.1 & Red Hat 7.2 & have had problems with Xwindows freezing on logout. I didn't have these problems with Red Hat 6.2.

Testing the settings with Xconfigurator causes a freeze all of the time at 1024x768 resolution, but does not freeze on 800x600.

On logging out from Xwindows, the computer freezes completely with a black screen. It seems as if the screen resolution changes first & then there is a complete freeze. Either Ctrl + Alt + backspace or ctrl + c fail to halt Xwindows, ctrl+alt+delete also fails to work & the power button is the only option.

The computer is using a Diamond Stealth III, with a CTX 1569 monitor.

Any ideas why this happens?

Try changing to the other (possibly the older) version of xfree86.

I had similar problems with an ATI Rage card, except it went into continious scroll mode upon exiting X.

Changing (downgrading) from xfree86 4.xx to 3.xx fixed this problem.

I have had similar experiences, e.g. a full system freeze just booting INTO linux. The problem was solved because in the kernel video buffer mode and applicable options weren't on. That fixed that problem. Also had a problem due to xf86config and not shoosing the right monitor for the resolution i was going to use. Some idears anyhow. Good luck...

Installed RH 7.2 over the week end on Intel 82810E main board, PIII 600EB processor machine.... Every thing seemed to work very well until I noticed a nagging problem. Immediately after installation, I was working as root for some customization etc. and when I logged out, oooooops ...... my machine freezed - not budging to three finger salute as well - made me to reach the RESET button...believe me, it's useful to have the RESET button on your machine even if you don't run Gates' OS !!

I suspect that "checking on" the RESTORE SESSION NEXT TIME check box on the logout confirmation dialogue causes the freeze. Whenever I did not check that on, I did not face the problem. Every time I check it on, I had to do the RESET job. So .... what can be the reason ? Any idea ????
