Smile Xwindows basic packages problem?


Question:

1. Now i install a ubuntu-6.06.1-server OS on my pc. I have finish install it, and i also know this will not include installed "gui"(gnome,kde). Than now i really need to use this server on "gui", how do i know which "all" package files need for me to install for operate this os by using gui. Not only this ubuntu other distribute also like centOS which is not include "gui" distribute is it can install gui?? Please list me a sample basic needed package for running "gui"(gnome).

For ubuntu you would need to install xserver-xorg or the meta package xorg, and of course gnome , kde or some other gui.

In console enter: sudo apt-get install xorg
then choose your window manager, the package kdebase will provide you with only essential kde programs as gnome-core will do for gnome, after that you will need a displaymanager to login, if you choose kde use kdm, and if gnome use gdm.
