Xubuntu Partitioner lacks an option

The partitioner in Xubuntu 8.10 doesn't give the option to install to a partiton, but only gives the option to use the entire harddisk to install to.

I've read on tutorials and such, that you *should* get a slider, to choose how much free space to use to create a new partition, but the option simply isn't there, it isn't even greyed out, it just doesn't appear on the menu.

Can anyone help?

EDIT: I'm attempting to use it to dual boot with windows XP, windows XP installed first, and Xubuntu installed secondly.

My only recent experiences with Ubuntu have been release candidates, so maybe I'm a little more jaded than I ought to be - but I've found Ubuntu's live-cd partitioning to be extremely lacklustre. Every new partition you create gets auto-mounted, which causes GParted to freak out and not complete the task. I very much prefer to use the GParted livecd to do my partitioning, and then boot a distro's install media with no partitioning left to be done.
