Xubuntu 12.04 won' boot and install on old laptop. Don't know how to set nomodeset

Hi everyone!

I am trying to get linux working on an old laptop, but I can't do it and I am getting crazy.

I made a bootable USB with Xubuntu 12.04 and I can't get past the boot screen. After I chose either trying without installing or install I just get to grey screen with cursor blinking in upper left corner. The USB is fine, because the OS is working fine on my other "newer" laptop. As I was reading all the posts in net I found that I should probably change the cfg file and add nomodeset to the line with quite splash. Please help me because this is making me crazy!

"12.04" , old computer :

Hit <F6> at boot time, and tick the options
( by using <space> ) :
acpi=of , noapic , nolapic , nodmraid , nomodeset.

Then <Esc> , and <Enter>, and things will usually work.

The advice in the last post should do the trick, but if it doesn't you need to tell us your computer's hardware: video card, CPU, amount of RAM. Then we can suggest something that will work.

Incidentally, you might have done better with the current version 14.04. Version 12 is still supported, but it's worse at selecting the right video driver.
