Xserver + ssh - mouse

Hi,

I have a Debian linux.
The kernel is recompiled to be no video driver, no mouse driver, no CD driver.
I always use terminal mode ssh to access it.

And now I want it run some X programs, like mozilla, gaim, etc.
So I need X.
What I want is to run X programs THROUGH SSH.
But when I install X from source, compile error. (gcc 3.3.2)
when I install X from binary, not works.
The X complain that I do not have a suitable video driver...

what should I do?

thx

I don't think that you need to install X-Windows on the machine that has Mozilla etc. on it, just on the client machine where they will be displayed.

XFree86 isn't made with the standard GNU tools, so compiling from source is probably a bad idea unless you're an X-Windows guru. If the client machine is running Windows, take a look at CygWin, which supplies X.

Thumbs up

Happy to hear you use Debian!

Are you familiar with dselect, the package management system?

By using it, you can select the package you want (ie: mozilla) and it will resolve 'dependancy' issues for you by suggesting additional required packages.

In your case, you could select just the packages you need for a base x-windows system without the xserver itself.

dselect can be intimidating for new users so I'd suggest taking a look at dselect Documentation for Beginners WHILE you have dselect open.

Good luck!
