Unhappy xserver cannot start in ubuntu linux

hello everybody,
i have a ubuntu linux installed in my hard disk on a 5 gb partition.i have windows xp professional and windows 98 on rest of the drive.
my problem is this that graphical interface of ubuntu is not working and it only shows text based interface.the error message it gives is
" i cannot star the x server(your graphical system).it is likely it is not set up correctly.would you like to view the server output to diagnose the problem."
when i click yes it says
"GDM: x server not found.
:/usr/xllr6/bin/x:0-br -audit 0-auth/var/lib/gdm/:0.xauth-nolisten tip-uti
error: command could not be executed.
please install the x server or edit/etc/gdm/gdm.conf to point to the right place."
my pc's hardware configuration is pentium 2.6 processor,256 DDR RAM,40 GB samsung haddisk and i have samsung syncmaster 17 inch monitor.
please help me out.

it looks like you've not got it all installed correctly. install the meta-package "x-window-system-core" installed, as this contains all the different packages you need. it should have ben installed by default, but if GDM is saying there's no server...

alternatively if it is fully installed, run xorgconfig to reconfigure your devices.

That's good. I have a friend who likes Ubuntu...me, I could do without it. I do think it's a good distro for beginners though....just not for me. Once you find a distro you like, stick with it. Best advice given to me by a friend. Mandrake is another one that's good for beginners.
