XSane does not recognize scanner!

Hi,
I have been trying to configure my HP Deskjet 4180 all in one printer/scanner and am having problems.

I found a thread on here describing how to configure a scanner. I followed it to a T. It said nothing more was necessary. However when I went to Xsane and clicked on it, I once again got the message NO SCANNER DETECTED! This after going through the entire configuration process.

I have the same problem with HPLIP. Before it allows me to configure the scanner. I get a popup window telling me that I do not have authorization. It then asks for a username and password. I tried using my root name and password, but it rejected it.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have used Ubuntu, and Kubuntu in the past and now have Suse 11.1 installed on my laptop. I have a pile of photos I had hoped to scan today. Without anything accomplished!

Someone please tell me what I need to do to get his thing working again!

It previously worked fine. This was a recent reinstall of Suse on this machine.

I just checked this list of supported scanners, unfortunately yours is not listed:

It's Working

Finally got the problem fixed.

However I am still having a problem configuring it with the HPIP setup, which is the one I really need to use, as it supports all the features of the printer/scanner/copier.

I have no idea what that pop up box, asking for authorization is all about. I cannot find any information anywhere. Does anyone know what username and password they are asking for? It has something to do with licensing ( a very big requirement here in the US ). It's one of those "I accept the terms things". Just cannot figure out whose name and password they are asking for.

Most of those printers on that list are European or other than US manufacturers. Never heard of most of them. The models listed for HP aren't even sold here anywhere. Out of curiosity, where are you located?

Thanks for the feedback though.

I'm also in the US, in Oregon. I have a Canon printer/scanner which also doesn't work with sane. I got printing functionality working with TurboPrint (a third-party commercial Linux driver which supports lots of printers) but for scanning I still have to use Windows.

Wish I could be of more help :)

When I looked at the Sane homepage, my scanner was listed. I was able to reinstall it. What I forgot to do at the time, was restart my computer. Once I did that xsane worked.

My problem still is with HPLIP and the HP Device manager. I cannot configure my scanner, as halfway through the process it says " you are not authorized to do this" and a pop up asking for a username and password appears. I have no idea what username and password it is asking for. My ROOT username and password evidently are not it, as they are rejected.
