xp update killed my linux drive

Don't know whether anyone else has experienced this, but,
I downloaded some XP updates this morning, only to find that one of them had trashed the MBR and that LILO wouldnt work. SO i ran the setup disk again intending to update the LILO only to find that all LINUX partitions had gone.

Is this deliberate malice by MS, or have i failed to understand something???

Copied from a personal e-mail:
"An XP update can do nasty things to a linux install. The EULA agreement you click
on with XP gives Microsoft the right to disable non-MS
software on your disk."
Dont know if it's just a rumor
:(

M$ is now in the business of snooping and destroying peoples computers lives and in general want to prove every living soul they are and will be Master we will be slaves to them.

Now you know the reason why I am trying to get out of using anything M$ has now, specifically because of this latest EULA.

In fact I reloaded M$ XP purposely left out any updates. Disalbed them in fact.

when you have linux and win xp on one disk and win xp is grading himself up, does this upgrading destroy your linuxinstallation or cab you turn it of in win xp??

M$ XP is a really wierd monster. I have not conclusivly proven it but my guess is just like in the EULA is can and will disable any non M$ products. I am having 9 different kinds of hell trrying to get Mandrke to boot on the same partition. Bought new ATI Video card today to tyr in reinstall it.
We will see if this fails I will get another HD and out it on it.

i found that the method that worked for me was this. Chop a 40Gig HD in half with fdisk. Set the first half as Primary DOS, set it Active and then format it from A:/ (using Win98 boot disk). Install Win98, then install XP Home over the top of 98 (XP setup won't start from DOS). Then, download all XP security and critical updates. Once this is done you can then set up RedHat or other flavour on the other half and let it load it's own boot loader.

Oh vittu! And I was planning to get XP soon...
Does it crush Linuxes on other harddisks, too?

PS: How big is XP install anyway? I have mandrake 9.0 on 1030 mbits. Is it bigger?

ikw38 12-06-2002 08:34 AM

Oh you can install XPEE in about 1.5 gigs. I would advise a sperate HD for first install and make sure you have copy w/o WPA otherwise nosy M$ will bill you for your copy at no xtra charge.....
Nice of them huh.....:Pengy:

xp is evil

Attention potential XP users

Please, if you can help it, don't use XP. If you must use M$ stick to 9x,2000,or ME (allthough i've heard ME is crap, more so than other M$ crap!!) if you can. XP is evil!!

This link will explain all, and is written objectively, not by a M$ basher:
read me!!!
