XP on 1 HDD,Linux on 2nd HDD,remove ,other won't launch
 

Okay, i have a new stupid problem.

I have 2 HDDs, on the master one, i have XP installed, on the slave one, i have Fedora Core 4 installed.

So, when i power on my pc, it passes by the post, then, it shows these sentence>>
Grub, loading stage 2 (as i remember), then, goes to a new screen in which i can select between XP and Fedora.

The problem now is that i use my second (slave) HDD as a mobile one, so, when i removed it and tried to work on XP, it FAILED; the screen of OSs selection didn't appear because i received an error>>
harddisk error... and it just hangs at this step.

I think that my mbr was overwritten.

The question now is: HOW CAN I WORK ON ANY OF THE TWO OSs SEPARATELY, i.e. if i remove the master HDD, i can work on Linux easily and peacefully. If i remove the slave one, i can work on XP?????

Please, how can i fix this annoying problem?

Okay, i've searched here and found that i can run XP again if i use the recovery console using the command fixmbr,
but my linux will be down, so, i guess i should install its bootloader SEPARATELY, HOW CAN THIS BE DONE?

You can have grub replace the XP bootloader on your primary disk's MBR. If you do it this way, you should be able to remove the second disk (and the "linux" selection will just fail when it is not present) but be able to boot into XP.

I think Fedora Core 4 installs GRUB as the bootloader by default, which reads the configuration file from the Linux partition, so if it isn't there GRUB doesn't know what to do.

You could instead use a bootloader that stores everything in the MBR like LILO or GAG.
