xp deleted grub
 

i have suse 9.1 PE and xp installed on computer. I formatted xp so there went the mbr.
Now Grub is gone. I used yast, system, boot loader config to propose new config:

Boot loader type GRUB
Boot loader location 1, IDE, 74.53 GB, /dev/hda, WDC-WD800BB-32CCB0(MBR)
Disc order /dev/hda
default section Linux
Available sections Linux (default), Linux other, Floppy, Failsafe
Activate Boot Loader Partion No


This is what i got when i tried to restore mbr of hard disk:

grub> root (null)

Error 23: Error while parsing number
grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 / d (hd0) / 0x8000 (null)/

Error 12: Invalid device requested
grub> quit

So the only way that i can get into to suse is to put in the cd, load and choose the install.
While i am in install, abort. then choose to load installed os from hd.

All i am trying to do is to get grub reinstalled. I thought about the boot disks but there is 3 to make, besides floppies are slow.

First, calm down a little. ;)

Now, you say that you can get SuSE to boot from harddisk (with a complicated procedure). Do that and open a Super user terminal window. From there, issue this command:
/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda

I forgot to let you know. I already tried that. The folder or file does not exiist.

I may not be tackling the actual problem. But if u want a quick-fix solution then just try running /sbin/lilo
:D

did you tried to boot from cd and type:
linux rescue
chroot /mnt/sysimage
and then
/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda ?

There seems to be a bug in SuSE that prevents grub-install from working. Follow the directions here instead:

But none of it I could get to work. I had the same problem with rh 8 and it was not this difficult to fix. I decided to install mandrake 10. See if this one is a little more user friendly

windows doesn't like grub (every linux install that i had were there was a windows/ linux dual boot, all windows i tried (2k and xp) killed grub). your best bet is to run lilo imo. lilo has never caused problems for me

Boot up off the SuSE CD
Continue with the installation
When prompted with the message "setup has found an existing linux installation, and the options "new installation", "boot installed system", etc, choose "repair current system", and follow the prompts.
