XP crashing in VMware Player with Ubuntu as physical OS
 
I have Ubuntu 10.10 (and Ubuntu Server) on a factory Dell Inspiron 530. It's running an Intel Pentium Duo Core CPU (1.6GHz), has 1GB RAM, and VMware Player installed. When I boot XP SP3, it runs, but randomly crashes. I managed to update IE6 to IE8 without crashing, but when I tried to download MS Office 2010 Professional (Trial), it crashed near the end of the download. I got a blue screen with the following:

"STOP: 0x0000000A, 0xB2EEf304, 0x00000002, 0x80508008

It then begins a physical dump of memory, completes, then automatically reboots XP in the virtual machine.

Every time it does this, it shows different memory addresses.

BTW, I also watched performance while doing this. As soon as CPU hit 100%, the download crashed, and soon after, XP crashed, sometimes locking up the physical machine.

Do you have the latest VMware Tools installed on the XP?

If problem persists run a memtest on your main system, then on your virtual system.

Not sure, but from the error output it seems that something is going wrong with the memory. And since you are running XP on a virtual mode, memory allocation is virtual as well. So there is no way for a physical memory test to fix or even locate the actual problem.

Reconfiguring the virtual machine might help.

I downloaded VMware Player, but could not get VM Tools to install. I am unclear as to why this was happening. The install would begin, then appear to finish, but VM Tools was nowhere to be found :/

I am going to try again, only this time, I will assign at least 1.5GB virtual memory for XP.

You may want to upgrade to the latest VMwarePlayer.

I currently run Ubuntu 9.10 with a XP on virtual machine with only 256mb virtual(3gb system memory) memory with no issues, not even lag. I run some minor office programs that do not run on linux.

If there is a problem with your real memory hardware you will have a problem with your virtual machine.
VmWare Player is just another program to Ubuntu and puts the virtual machine into any of the available system memory.

Did you install the VM Tools on the XP machine itself?

How many CPU's do you have selected for the XP machine? If more then 1, change to 1.
