Xorg problems with Fedora Core 6

Hi All, new to the group

Before I begin, I've just installed Fedora Core 6...

I'm having a problem starting my X windows with the following error (from file /var/log/Xorg.setup.log):

---start---
X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.9-34.ELsmp i686 Red Hat, Inc.
Current Operating System: Linux dunzsvlx01.dunz.local 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 #1 SMP Mon Oct 16 14:54:20 EDT 2006 i686
Build Date: 04 October 2006
Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.1.1-47.fc6
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

(++) Using config file: "/tmp/tmppykl0Yxorg.config"
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
---end---

It's strange that it says "no screens found" as the monitor was plugged in. Its a ViewSonic flat screen, I don't know it that makes a difference...

Has anyone else had this issue? I've run Fedora 5 in the past and never experienced anything like this... help!!

Thanks in advance

was it working fine before? sounds like an /etc/X11/xorg.conf problem

you may need to run xorgconfig as root and configure it, did you change any hardware like mouse, keyboard, video card, monitor???

This site is great, just found the solution under another article. I fixed it by changing the following in xorg.conf:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" #### This is the line I added ####
EndSubSection
EndSection

... and then rebooting. Stangely, it didn't go into effect by bouncing it into runlevel 3 and then back into 5. I only found that it worked as I was rebooting to checkout the video card make... sometimes the best solutions come by accident!

Thanks to anyone that looked at this
