hello,
i am running ubuntu, and used Synaptic to install xmms for my mp3s. all was well for a day or so. then i started fooling around, installing jvm and plugins and some things.
i forget exactly what i did, but... now, whenever i try and open xmms or open mp3 (which default opens with xmms), it doesnt show up, or seem to run. either my eyes are playing trix, or, when i open it, i see a small flash in the taskbar[?] at the bottom, as if it opens/closes immediately, maybe im just making myself think i see it though.
i decided then to use Synaptic to first do reinstall of xmms... didnt seem to work... then un/installed again and nothing seemed to change either.
i was going to simply reinstall ubuntu altogether, but this shouldnt be necessary, and would be a good experience for me to learn and repair it with someones guidance. im wondering if there is something you can tell me to fix this? or some file to check or, whatever... to see whats up?
if you need more details on what happens when i open it or what i might have been doing prior to it failing to load, ask ill log into it and try and think about it.
I'd try uninstalling it and compiling it from source, then if it doesn't work you know you have a major conflict with something XMMS links to. Don't use it so I can't tell you where to look for a log file but if you know where one is, try running tail -f /path/to/log and then running XMMS in a GUI and it should tell you why it quits.
uninstall.. could i use Synaptic to uninstall fine?
"compiling it from source"...that mean go to the site and download the source for xmms and extract it and follow the directions there?
i just tried launching xmms from cmdln and it gave this msg
libmikmod.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: ../sysdeps/generic/dl-tls.c: 72: _dl_next_tls_modid: Assertion `result <= _rtld_local._dl_tls_max_dtv_idx' failed!
i dont even know where i installed xmms to, to find the log it may produce... i dunno im too tired. thanks though
To install and uninstall open Synaptic with superuser privelegies, fire up search, find your xmms package, deselect it, then when it uninstalls select it again. Check also for recommended packges it suggests
perfect!
i did what you recommended... using synaptic to completely remove it and reinstall, also selecting recommended packages and it works again my ears thank you
'libmikmod2' was recommended, so i selected and it works. i must have done something to this pkg config when i was doing jvm setup.. id think.
