Xine DVD playback problem
 

Hello,

I recently installed the xine media player for the purpose of watching DVDs on my Linux PC. I did some research on the net and found out that in order to view them properly, I needed to install the libraries libdvdread, libdvdnav, and libdvdcss, which all went without a hitch.
Now the first two DVDs I tried to watch, worked perfectly, but then the trouble started: from then on, it refused to play any DVD I inserted (I tried more than 10), giving a prompt with the message:

The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or the
source doesn't contain data (e.g.: not disc in drive). (Error reading NAV
packet)

I googled this error and found that on quite a few forums, people with this problem were instructed to install the libdvdcss library, and they then responded by saying it had solved the problem! To be sure, I installed a new version of libdvdcss (but the old one had only been downloaded a week before) but the problem persists, and the wierdest thing is, the two DVDs which worked initially still work perfectly, but not a single other one does, which baffles me..

Is there anyone else who has had this problem and/or can help me fix it?

btw, it's xine1-1.0 on a FC3 system..

I have had the same experience with a similar setup: some discs play, and some don't. Looking at the errors I get (and I don't remember since this isn't the box with the DVD player), I am thinking it has to do with whatever encryption the disks are using is something that libdvdcss isn't breaking. The ones that won't play for me are relatively new discs. I haven't messed with it too much, since generally I do more work than play on that machine.

Sounds like if some are working you've at least got it configured correctly. It may be a matter of waiting for an update to the libs to come out that will work with them. If you hear of any other solutions, please post, though.

Try Mplayer plus Win32 codecs you should be able to find rpm's for FC3 or use Synaptic

I'm not sure how this is supposed to help in this situation where certain DVD's aren't playing.

On a separate note, I already have mplayer and the codecs installed and they work fine to watch wmv's on the web and such. Thanks anyway.

Mplayer will play DVD's in fact most any DVD's

Oh, I see. As I mentioned in my other post, it's the libraries on my box that are having the issues. All the DVD players on Linux I'm familiar with use dvdread and dvdcss, etc. (including Mplayer). So alternate players aren't working for me either. They all throw the same errors about dvdcss or dvdread not working, if the disk spins up at all. Thanks for the thought anyway.

Did'nt think Mplayer used external libraries but I may be wrong, any way good luck

solved the problem, had to change the permissions on hdc (chmod 777 /dev/hdc) and now all the dvds I try, work..
