Xine?
 

Ok i have Xine loaded on my pc but i cant get it to play AVI files, or the VCD files, or DVD files that its suppose to play. I have found that my dvd's are copy writed thats why those dont work but as far as the vcd i found it was a bad CD but i know the AVI's work so when i tried to view an avi it would freeze on a frame and play sound of the movie file but never the video. Whats up with that?

Use mplayer instead, but if you wanna use a vastly less powerful and flexible player...

do you have libdvdread/css installed? you'll need that for dvd's, using the d4d plugin (go search) also you'll want avifile 0.60 for decent avi playback. no idea about vcd, never used them

my gcc is not supported by Mplayer

install a newer version then. it's easy enough to do from source.

alternatively you can still force mplayer to use 2.96, with a ./configure optino, but it's not really recmommended. apparently redhat claim that gcc.96-85 or greater is safe tho, so it may be worth a shot.

Try to install xine from rpms. They are at xine.sourceforge.net -
use the adress that is something like External Resources (about
middle of the page)
There are all kinds of rpms that also work with all DVDs.
I got the rpms from the site with cambuco+rio in the address.
Threw them in the box - worked like a beauty.
( just have a look at the mplayer mailinglist - those guys have a
attitude from hell - if something goes wrong its always your fault)

xine crahes too much.

use mplayer.

upgrade to gcc3.0, i believe it mentioned to dont upgrade to newest one bc it compiles with errors?

anyways, i got xine working first. CRASHES like crazy...

mplayer... smoooooth playback.... :)

havent got dvd and vcd to work but getitng there... hopefully...;)

MPLAYER RULES!!!
Its just not everybodys piece of cake to compile it.
On connectiva I couldnt get it to work - no matter what.
With Suse I got it compiled ok and working.
Then the other day I decided to get rid of the whole thing and reinstall with reiserfs to check that out - otherwise same install.
First it wouldnt compile anymore - got that fixed.
Then it would compile but didnt create a .configure file - fixed that.
Then it wouldnt find the gui which is in the the place where mplayer is looking for it - fixed that.
Xine rpms dowloaded, installed - up and running.
In your face commandliners and compilers!!!

i wasw readnig a linux magazine today which had a review of dvd players which basically went alonjg the lines of...

Xine... blah blah blah.... rambling drivel... blah blah, very good, blah blah.blah blah blah.... rambling drivel... blah blah, very good, blah blah.

MPlayer.. perfect but who cares...

Ogle...blah blah blah.... rambling drivel... blah blah, very good, blah blah.blah blah blah.... rambling drivel... blah blah, very good, blah blah.

so bloody annoying, they said it was better than the others but only gave it 1 column... nrrgg.

same issue did a cdburner review, and didn't even bother to review eroaster, which is easily the best i think.

Hello. I used to use Xine but it never work with all dvds. It would only work with those with no backplay block. I installed the gcc, and all the libs and everything, and still wouldn't play them. And it would also crash quite a bit of times....so I decided Xine sucked...
Then I went for the search, I saw mplayer, and some others, but then I came across a player called VideoLAN
you can get it at www.videoLan.org
This player is excellent. It has every single feature any Windows dvd playing software can have. Subtitle, audio change, zoom, angles, everthing!, and it also has a great menu display! with icons and evertyhing for user friendly.
Try it out, it very easy to install, just untar and install, and it'll get you going in no time!!
have fun. It is much better tha Mplayer too...

I'm not too sure what DIVX is, care to explain it a bit more?, :p :p

DIVX is a codec that is used to compress movies. There are
different codecs - a lot of them.
Divx is probably right now the one that is used the most for videos that you can download from the internet.
avi is usually DIVX encoded - if the player doesnt support whatever code was used to compress the movie you cant play it.
Plus you need to have the codec installed in the correct place so
your player can use it.
There are right now divx3 and divx4 available for Linux.
Divx5 is new and should be out for Linux before too long.
There are a lot more codecs - last time I checked I had around 60
on my box - but divx is the newest and most widely used.

mplayer already supports divx5.

well, of course it does, what else would you expect??
